Dash of Courage: Groundhog Day

"What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today."-Bill Murray
Next Monday is Groundhog Day.
Most people know it as the holiday where a groundhog predicts the weather.
I know it as the movie my Dad and I watched together every single year.
Groundhog Day was his favorite movie.
It was my worst nightmare.
If you've seen it, you know the premise:
Bill Murray wakes up and lives the same day.
Again
And Again.
And Again.
At first, it's funny.
Then it's frustrating
And then he realizes...
The problem was never the day.
It was how he kept showing up in it.
And at some point you realize...this isn't just a movie
It's a mirror.
I've lived this too. Calling ridiculous patterns "just life" when I knew they were "just fear" and I needed to change course.
For a lot of people, life doesn't fall apart.
It just quietly repeats.
Same routines
Same conversations
Same excuses
Different date on the calendar.
Routine is a comfortable way to avoid courage. So this year instead of asking whether the groundhog sees his shadow, I've been thinking of a better question:
If your life were a movie, what would each role want you to do Next?
The Writer
The writer would say: Change the Script
Stop waiting for "someday" to give you better material. Write the scene you wish existed. One honest conversation. One bold decision. One different ending. The Director
The director would say: This take isn't working
Adjust the angle. Change the environment. New habits. New inputs. New people. The Actor
The Actor would say: Go off script
The routine is killing the story. Do something unexpected. Say the thing you keep rehearsing in your head. Do the thing autopilot would never choose. The Producer
The Producer would say: Invest where it matters
Time. Energy. Attention. Stop funding distractions that feel productive but get you nowhere.
Your life doesn't need another doom scroll, it needs a new scene. The Audience
The Audience would say: Please don't waste this scene
Because the truth is, you don't just watch your life.
You create it.
Dash of Courage
If your life has started to feel like the same scene on repeat, don't wait for the calendar to change it.
Change the character
Change the choice
Change the story.
Groundhog Day only changes when the character does.
And that character is us.
Courage over Comfort,
Garrett
